The leatherback turtle season started this month and the first turtle already layed her eggs by the first lagoon last night! Everybody is excited and the patrols by volunteers on the beach have started. Read here the story of volunteer Geraldine about her experience on the first day:
First turtle of the season 2015!
The turtle season is open! Coming in as the first group of volunteers at La Tortuga Feliz we were very welcomed by Robert. You would think of slowly setting in before they expect anything of physical labor in return, but that was not the case. We were all scheduled to patrol the beach in our first night. Would we be the “lucky ones” to see a leatherback mum laying her eggs? The group was excited to find out.
The answer is YES! The circumstances were near to perfect. The beach was light up by an almost full moon and under a sky full of stars we spotted a gentle giant coming on shore. To be part of this true magical moment made the walk into one of the most blissful experience in my life. I couldn’t wish for a better beginning of this turtle adventure. Feeling home already!
